Hey guys - been a while since I have been on, but life is well.

Saw this tidbit on the local news and if anyone wants a working Whelen 3016, here's your chance.

Standard City of Tulsa auction rules will apply here - win the bid, pay on the spot, you haul it off.

I jokingly showed this to my wife earlier, and she laughed when I said I really wanted one for my birthday today... But seriously, I wouldn't even think about it. You don't realize how huge these things are until they are on the ground. (That and I don't have that kind of cash laying around.)

For the record, most of these were initially installed around 1986 when the city realized they needed a better mass warning system in light of the 1984 Memorial Day flood. At the time, the 3016's were the cutting edge of siren technology, and the city needed to desperately upgrade the system of Federal 1000's/1003's/2T22's that were essentially Cold War relics and hadn't been upgraded since their installation.

Now the city is nearly complete with the installation of Whelen 2910's and reusing some Whelen Vortex models in lesser populated areas (similar to OKC's system). So, these fairly decent 3016's will be auctioned off as surplus - and they usually end up in communities surrounding Tulsa that don't have sirens or their systems are antiquated/need expansion.

Cheers, y'all.

Thunderbolts and 2t22s were "cold war relics" in 1986? :\ If the 3016s were installed then they have most likely been in service longer than the "relics" they replaced.

Sounds tempting but I might wait 'til that 4008 gets old. $300 isn't bad for a complete 3000 though. Too bad Owasso wouldn't replace their ATIs for a 3000 system. That'd be interesting. But maybe some towns in the metro will take them though. They're not in bad shape most likely.

The thing is, 2T22's weren't out until the early '70s from what I can remember. I am for sure not as sharp as I used to be on siren knowledge. Used to be I could ask anyone questions and already know the answer, now it's like I'm sitting here playing scrabble without any of the vowel letters.

The 3T22 began production in 1955 i believe. I figure the 2T22 was out around the same time.

In the late 1980's Federal dropped most of their dual tone civil defense sirens, during that period the 2T22, 3T22, Model 5 & 5T, 2T, Thunderbeam, And the Thunderbolt were discontinued. It was around the time Federal moved from the Blue Island facility to the University Park facility.

I was just taking a wild guess! Lmao. Anyway it's helpful having a little refresher. I thought that it was in the early 1990s ('91 or so) that the Thunderbolt series was discontinued, but then again, anyone can edit a wikipedia page and the information that I learned may have been misleading.

I'll leave y'all to it.

IIRC the Thunderbolt was discontinued in 1989, to make way for the 2001 series that came to be in 1988.
