South Florida (Miami / Fort Lauderdale / West Palm Beach) sirens?

Thu Nov 05, 2015 7:08 pm

I've been curious about this but what siren systems are there in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties? The only systems I can think of is a system of Whelen 4004's up at FAU in Boca Raton and a system in Homestead and Port St. Lucie. Are there any other systems in those three counties and when do they all test?

And you felt the need to say this why? Please don't post something just for the sake of making a post.

I found this map, https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mi ... 8&hl=en_US

Seems Fort Lauderdale has a WPS 2805, and West Palm Beach has a Modulator 2008, there could be more sirens, but this is just from the map I found! I'll edit if I find any more maps. I don't know testing schedules :/ Probably a good idea to call the EMA for those area's and ask.
I own: One complete SiraTone, another SiraTone control module, a 1600W MC, 2 old ATI controllers, 2 round ATI horns with drivers, a ATI-DSA 4 thing, a Federal Signal FC, AR timer and Siratrol, and a small CD&F.

I'm definitely the guy to know =)

All the counties used to be loaded with sirens, very few remain. Almost every city had either fire, civil defense, or combination sirens or siren systems. Dade never really had VFDs in the unincorporated areas (has been county fire for a long time) Broward had many VFDs almost all of which had sirens. Palm Beach County had VFDs that later consolidated into fire districts, both had a number of sirens.

For sirens currently up

Palm Beach County:
Palm Beach Shores VFD has their active Modulator (was tested Sat at noon, may still be)
Abandoned Canal Point VFD has a Model 2
FAU has sirens on their Boca and Jupiter campuses
Palm Beach Aggregates has a Model 2
West County Power Plant has 2 Sentry 15V1T sirens
Some of the sugar refineries have sirens also

Broward County:
Dania Beach FD has their old Sterling mounted in front of station
Plantation VFD has one of their Model 5s mounted in front of station at Broward Blvd on west side of Turnpike
Lauderdale-by-the-Sea VFD has a Whelen 2805
Pompano Beach has their old STL-10 I restored for them at their fire museum. It was supposed to go on the roof at some point, but has been inside for years.
Wilton Manors' old Thunderbeam was in storage and may be at the Broward/Ft Lauderdale Fire Museum now
Abandoned Lake Forest VFD has Model 5 on station

Dade County:
Turkey Point Whelen system
None of the old CD sirens remain

When do the Whelen's at FAU test? If that MOD still tests every Saturday I could possibly get a recording of that on my spring break trip if that's the case

It changes when they test, but they do publish it ahead of time. It's generally twice a year. Just search for siren test at fau.edu when your trip is closer.

Oviedo, FL has a system of ten 2001-130's the city is located in central Florida they test on the first Saturday of every month at noon i've been there before. I live in Broward County it's about a 4 Hour drive also the Fort Lauderdale by the sea fire department has a Whelen WPS-2900 series i've contacted them about the siren, they never answered me back. I also know one of the plantation fire departments has a model five I'm pretty sure it's inactive check the siren archive most of them have been removed in Florida but still some are out there.

Port Saint Lucie has some Whelens. I seen one on the way to Stuart while riding with my mom in the car.
Back with good behavior. ;)
