There is at least one left that still operates in Southwest Ontario and I plan to record it soon. Does anyone have information regarding the type of sirens? I know there are quite a few out on the west coast, but around here most sirens are Model 2's.

I wouldn't be able to tell just by the description, but I would assume they are some sort of CLM siren, since both the CLM rotating and "mailbox" sirens look nearly identical to Carters. Does it look like this one by any chance?

As I understand it, the Canadian government first bought sirens from the UK after the war, but by the 1950's, CLM was building copies and later began to produce their own designs, such as the huge 20/24 port low-speed model, the vertical siren, and the rotating one.

The Dashwood siren should be this CLM model.

I believe that siren to be the smallest of CLM models. Smaller single phase motor, longer and the stators/rotors are much narrower. To my knowledge these models were never used for Canadian Civil Defence. Mainly fire sirens and they were very popular in the West Coast of Canada.

I should really do a nice write up of CLM in general, I have a tone of history and information.

Here is another video of one at the Union Bay BC fire hall:

Another Carter style in Arnprior Ontario, its located on the fire/police station and is still used/tested. This style again looks slightly different. I know a company in Montreal also made a carter style, though I have never seen one.

I have found no proof through all my research to support any sirens being bought from England and Imported for CD. There was an article I read of a old power plant on the east coast of Canada and it said they had a siren from England. It could be possible but I think there far and few between.

Something very interesting I discovered a while back was with a 20/24 port CLM model in Southwestern Ontario. That model was 100% made by them (I have a manual) but It had controls by BURLECK CARTER of Toronto Ontario. I have yet to find anymore information about them. They also scrapped those controls which was very disappointing.

It does look like that siren, but maybe with a thicker body? There were different models of the Canadian Carter right, and this one in Bothwell looks similar to a picture you posted a while back of one near Mississauga in the 1940s IIRC.

They were late testing it and by then I had already given up and left. I'll try to head back out there in the next three weeks.
