Finally, a town with some common sense...

After the recent tornado in the NW suburbs of Indy, the town of Whitestown finally realized that their siren coverage is seriously lacking. The Whitestown area is one of the fastest growing parts of the Indy metro and they're fast outgrowing their tiny siren system. Also, apparently, they were lied to about the effective coverage range of the sirens that they have. Luckily, the town sees sirens as an "important piece to the puzzle" of their emergency alert system and thinks "the benefit of public safety and peace of mind well outweigh the cost" of purchasing and installing new sirens. Of course this is one of the wealthier suburbs of Indy, but at least they're using their money in a good way:

Here's their current "system" of 2 T-128's and a Model 5 at the fire station (rough town boundaries are in red.). This story makes me think the model 5 isn't used for tornado warnings since they mention only 2 sirens. The north siren was added just last fall. The one to the south has been there since development really started taking off. There is a lot more housing development planned north of 65 between the two interchanges, not to mention the golf course and subdivision south of 65, so they definitely could use at least 3 new T-128's.

Interesting video. It would make sense that they were lied to, no way those things have a 3.5 mile radius, especially during inclement weather. Also gotta love those shoddy installations with the PVC with weather heads used as the main run, with exposed wire near the siren head.

They used the audio from this video.. I wonder if this counts as unauthorized use of someone else's sounds. I mean, who would like someone (even a news network, famous YouTuber, etc) using their media without permission?
(Please ignore this ifthe news network really went to Miles City just to record their siren, or permission was granted to the news network)

Some cites need to watch this video. I hate it when people say that sirens are "outdated" and all we need is "phones and technology."

Newsflash people: Tornadoes have a tendency to knock down those cell phone towers. I've seen an EF-4 tornado rip through a town and the only siren-related damage was a broken rotator, and the tornado passed a couple blocks away from it. (The siren was a Whelen.)

Cell tower gets knocked out. Then what do you do?

You go to the EOC and if the sirens are electronic you use them for announcements, and you get ham radio operators in there to help with evacuations and commnunication.
