How far from the siren head on a Federal Model 5/7 does the sound travel in miles?

This can depend on many factors, including wind speed and direction, how healthy the siren is, and the terrain. On an average day with average terrain I'd say a Model 5 could be heard for about 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 miles, however I'd give it an effective radius of 1 mile.

I know this is about the Model 5/7 but my model 2 does a solid 1 mile on 240VAC (it's the 240V version) and that's siting on the ground in the woods.

Isn't the effective range of the 2001 1 mile? Shouldn't a device smaller than the 2001, with a lesser db @ 100 ft have a lower effective range?

The effective range of a 2001 has to be at least 1.5 miles. Of course that is dependent of the model, but...

I did. My bad.

I give all 2001's a 1 mile range. They are all pretty much the same as far as the projection of the sound. Yes they can be heard further but the effective 70 decibel range is about a mile. I would say the effective 70db range for a model 5 is around a half a mile, maybe a little more depending on conditions.

When me and Michael were recording the Type B in Shandon, we heard the Okeana 2001 about 1 1/2 miles away. Sometimes, even on a windy day, I can hear the closest Boone County siren (a 130) from 2 1/2 miles away.

That sounds more realistic. I think for the record there should be a difference between how far a sirens sound can travel and a sirens effective range. For example, a Thunderbolt can be heard up to 5 miles away and even more if the right conditions are present. Although, FS is not going to install a system based off how far the sound can travel.
