The Siren Board

My hometown, Rossford Ohio is having siren problems. A 2001-130 siren located at the high school in downtown is starting starting to have problems. The city is thinking about replacing it once it dies out (the siren was put in in 1990, so it's old), which may not be that long. If I were given the chance to give suggestions to the city of Rossford what siren do you think they should have?

If I was going to replace it with a directional siren, I would put in a Federal Signal 508. It has a distinct deep tone which will travel far. If they are looking for a omnidirectional siren I would go with Sentry. They have many omnidirectional siren models that each appeal to different coverage needs. Sentry has a model called a 40V2T-B, which is a powerful omnidirectional siren which produces 130 decibels at 100 feet. It also has battery backup, so if the power goes out, you still have a functioning siren, it also has a distinct dual tone which travels far. If choosing from either of these companies I would personally choose sentry, this is because I am pulled towards omnidirectional sirens due to the 360 degree sound output compared to a directional siren. Both sirens have their ups and downs, but I would personally choose a 40V2T-B due to its very powerful sound output and battery backup.

I'd definitely suggest a Sentry Siren or Tempest Siren, but I doubt that they'd be willing to budge, as all of their new sirens are federal.

1.) It isn't a 2001-130, since they were made "2006 onward" and 2.) Maybe a 508, A Sentry 10v2t or louder, or an Eclipse-8. How big is the town? How much of a coverage gap would there be? You have to put that in. It's like blindly getting a new car without knowing anything about the car.

I'd go with a 508. We've replaced around 6 or 7 of our sirens with them, as well as 1 new install, and they don't disappoint.

I'd go Sentry. Battery backup, built to last. Perhaps a 7V8-B or 16V1T-B.

Also, I looked at your siren: It's actually a 2001-DC.

The county commonly replaces their sirens with federal signal 2001's, but maybe the city could go with something better, if you can give some more feedback, that would be great.

I really don't think that second 2001 was installed at the same time. It's a 2001-SRNB, which didn't come out until the early 2000's.

I was told by the fire chief, which they own both sirens, that they were both installed in 1990 to replace an STH-10 in downtown. Maybe the one by the Electrical Union was recently upgraded by the county. I would like your suggestions on what type of siren would fit that location.

Definitely Federal Signal 508. Best bang-for-the-buck rotational siren out currently, and it will be compatible with the current siren system since it's a Federal. If they've been happy with the 2001, going with a 130 would be another possible option, but with a 508 you will have improved coverage and the controls are the same as a 130.
