Anyways, I'm curious what's the purpose of the band around the chopper. Can anyone explain?

Probably to keep birds and stuff like that out of the chopper.

The purpose was to direct the sound to the top and bottom projectors, so it could be deflected outwards. Under the band is a piece of metal mesh that keeps things out of the rotor.

But why not just another set of disks put at 45 degrees, top side points up, the bottom, vice versa? I mean, using the reflected sound principle just like the Thunderbeam.
PS : Anyone would like to mutate an RSH-10 into RSD-10?

Well there's an idea! I've always wondered what a dual-tone STH-10, complete with projector horns would look like!

It was apparently an experiment with sound compression, with the band forcing the sound compress into a more powerful wave. I am not entirely sure on this, however. I am also not sure that the compression did much to the sound anyway. As I said, I am not entirely sure on this.

Well, since the thread is back again, I should add that the SD-10 that used to be on the Schenectady City Hall was bandless. I can't remember if the one at the football field on Balltown Rd. was as well. The whole system in that city was ancient.

A band straight in front of the ports can only serve to diminish the output, and I'm sure at least a few on the design team had their doubts. I think more than anything it served to act as a convenient protective ring against nesting critters.

I've heard from some people that the SD-10 is louder without the deflection band, so I doubt it worked very well in reality.
