Cherokee County and Tallapoosa County leaders both recently announced they are phasing out their systems.

Says it in both articles, but the tl;dr version is that the counties don't want to pay for the upkeep and maintenance of the sirens as the systems are small and don't cover much of the counties in addition to the fact that people can get warning information from weather radios/television/radio/cell phones these days.

Personally, I think it's a dumb decision, but given how many counties in this state can barely maintain their roads and signage, if at all, it makes sense as to why they'd want to cut spending on something that they think can be "replaced" by other methods.

I wonder if any of the individual cities in those counties will put up their own sirens or have their own systems independent of the county systems.

Bad move. Alabama has been hit with several tornadoes in the recent years.

They're going to sit on top of poles.

Fiberglass doesn't rust. In addition, the video on the (second?) article says they will be taking them down.

It will only take one fatality during a bad storm to get them back. This isn't uncommon. City takes down sirens, people apathetic. Tornado hits city, some people die, other citizens triggered/shooketh/outraged and want a head on a platter, city gets siren system again.
