The Siren Board

If something like this has been posted before, please redirect this post. I couldn’t find anything.

I read an article recently that stated that Birmingham, AL has a system of 254 sirens. That number was fairly staggering to me as I thought Indianapolis’ system of 168 sirens was a lot for a city. That led me to another question: what’s the biggest siren system currently in operation in the US. Now, I’m sure Hawaii’s statewide system of 340(?) will take the cake, but let’s exclude that obvious choice to make this more fun.

For the sake of making this easier, let’s constitute a system as “this number of sirens can be set off by a single control point at once”. For example, many indiana counties have countywide “systems” that can be set off by the EMA but they consist of many smaller systems that are owned by other entities. Hamilton county is one such example - the county owns only one siren but can set off all the sirens in the county (and some in other counties) if needed. The countywide system is the one we’d be counting here, not the smaller ones.

The largest near me are the systems for nuclear power plants. Perry Nuclear has approximately 76 sirens, and there are 2001-SRN’s that fill in the rest of Lake County that were installed for weather warnings bringing the total to about 120. Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station in Beaver County, PA has approximately 118 sirens.

Genesee County Michigan has 131, Monroe county/Fermi Nuclear has somewhere around 113

196 4004s and a handful of 3016s in Franklin County (Columbus, OH) with another 29 2750/2805/2905s in the northwestern portion of the county maintained by the suburb of Dublin

St. Louis County, MO runs a system of 204 Whelen 2900s, the overwhelming number of which are 2910s (with some 2906s and 2908s interspersed).

Largest in Georgia is going to be Bartow County, with 93 Whelens of varying models, and a lone older than the hills 2.

Oakland County, Michigan: 256

A few years back I was talking to the sales rep at WSS and I believe he said that Oakland County either had 254 or 256. If I recall correctly, he said the system consists of purely 2001 series sirens.
This was in 2014, so it is likely that they have more sirens now.

Currently Dane County has 136 sirens, but will add 4 more this summer, which will add a total to 140 Sirens.

Dallas, Texas has a system of 162 sirens. However, I'm not sure if that's just in city limits, or if those are the counties sirens as a whole.
