Ya they are very loud, the only thing is the sound gets mixed in with ambient city noise like traffic and such due to it being such a low tone.

These things put out 129 dB at 100 ft. Equivalent to a modern Electro-mechanical siren. A few minutes ago at noon our Whelens went off for the monthly test and its such a clear cool day that I could hear 6 of them wind-up and wind-down. Under stormy conditions however, I can only hear the siren located half a mile from my house.

I don't think Whelens are that bad up close. They're loud but they don't hurt your ears. I've viewed a couple of 4004 tests and I didn't have to cover my ears or anything. Living by one wouldn't be too bad I imagine.

Those are the siren's that are responsible for the demise of the system of 2t22's, t bolts,penatrators,& model 2's that were Little rock's tornado warning system for many years.You just can't stop progress & technology....
