The Mysteries of Owen Valley: Bishop California

Sat Sep 16, 2023 1:15 am

Bishop California is a really unique system containing 5 sirens (as of 9/15/2023) where most do daily noon blasts. Currently, their system consists of two Darley Model 5, a Darley Model 7TT, a Darley STH-10, and a B&M siren. Before 2018, the system used to consist of 6 sirens with another Darley Model 5. I have contacted the fire chief of Bishop regarding the locations of the sirens, and just today learned that there is a siren at the southwest corner of E South St. and S 3rd St. It turns out this siren is a B&M!

Unfortunately per his word, it has not been heard for about 5 years and is possibly in for a removal. Additionally, the Model 5* on the south side of town has not been working recently and will be receiving repairs. I do hope the B&M gets second thoughts for repair, or if removed saved into a local museum, but we will let time do its thing.

A map of the system can be found here: https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid= ... sp=sharing

Bishop California is the only known system in California containing 2+ more sirens to test daily at noon. There are videos floating around the internet of this system. The ones that I could find are:
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Ff5NB_ZcAdM - Darley STH-10 Sounding for a fire call
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMaxwjv1qOM - Darley STH-10
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4iJaGSqi5-U&t=5s - Darley Model 7TT
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30VadgM7eXo - Darley Model 5

If anyone plans to film this system, I recommend any of the sirens at the fire stations. The Darley STH-10 does sound off for a shorter period of time compared to the rest of the system.
