C.H.I.P.'s siren

Thu Mar 20, 2008 9:38 pm

Does anyone know what make and model siren was used on the motorcycles on the tv show "Chips"? I know it is not a mechaical driven siren, even though it sounds like it. If you look at the front of the motorcycles, it is an electronic speaker and not a motor driven siren.

The siren sound you heard was probably a sound effect, not the siren you saw.

That's correct about it being a sound effect. An interesting point: They filmed a scene of the first (pilot) episode on my street; Westwood Blvd in West Los Angeles. You can see me at about age 9 out front of the house, bending over fooling around with one of our sprinklers. (not a good shot, since all you see is the buttocks  ). They had been going up & down the street doing retakes all day, and no sirens were blown out loud, but in the show, the sirens had been added. The bikes were mounted on a trailer behind the camera car, with Jon and Ponch pretending to ride.

I still wonder about whether the bikes actually had mechanical or electronic sirens? That's a good question.

Yes, that's a real 500-lb Federal SD-10 I'm holding (braggart!)

So if the sirens have been added into the show wouldn't be the same for the show EMERGENCY! ?

On Emergency most of the time the sirens are added but every once and a while it's obvious they are actually using the vehicle sirens but not very often. It's usually when they aren't on the street.

Yep, Emergency's sirens were dubbed in. If you watch the first season, with the Crown Fire Coach engine, there is a CP-58 speaker center mounted on the front of the truck. But the siren sound is mechanical. (They didn't have the mechanical sounding electronics back then, LOL).

Just another interesting point of information. For the siren sounds in Emergency and Adam-12, they used a Federal Interceptor in the manual mode. For the mechanical siren sounds on Emergency they used a B&M S-8 siren-- the exact same ones that were found mounted behind the grills on the 1960's vintage Crown Firecoach trucks. So the mechanical siren sounds were accurate for California.

FWIW
