Whelens, Mod or DSA, ATI's?, 2001's, xT22, and TBolt

Wed May 14, 2008 3:02 am

I went down to the Louchem Federal Credit Union in Rubbertown today to record the Whelen at Rohm and Haas, and what ever other sirens sounded. Even though I had to use the built-in mic in my stereo recorder this time, I still got a decent stereo recording. The wind was blowing fairly strong, so you'll hear a little wind noise every once in a while.

The first siren heard is the brand new Modulator or DSA that was just installed at the Eckart plant. This siren was tested on and off for about 25 minutes today, so I had to edit out most of the repeats. The Mod starts out doing a lower pitched Code Three signal, then it is tested in various signals throughout the remainder of the recording. Then, you can hear the ATI's? at Dupont, which aren't very loud at all, and sound like backup beepers. Then, you will hear two Whelens, which both belong to Rohm and Haas. The one on the right is the one I heard at Bethany Lane. I was surprised how soft the Whelens sounded from where I was standing. They were being blocked by several buildings. Next, Louisville's sirens start up, and you can hear at least 2 2001's, a 2T22, and at least one distant Thunderbolt. The Whelens can be heard throughout the remainder of the city's test, and the Mod even joins in the chorus. After the Whelens and the city's sirens shut down, the Mod can be heard again, and it does Wail, Hi-Lo, and a couple of coded pulse signals. I didn't hear anything from American Synthetic, either because they didn't sound their sirens, or they were drowned out by the others. Another plant called Arkema was supposed to test their new siren, but I didn't hear anything from their direction, except one of Rohm and Haas's Whelens.

Edit: I was also sent this video from YouTube user BackupNTAuth, to post here, of the sirens at his house. In his video, you can hear the Pope Street and Water Company Thunderbolts, another dual tone Thunderbolt, several 2001's, and possibly a 2t22. For the second month in a row, the Welen at the Water Company failed to sound.
