No American Imperialist Spies Allowed! - Yantai siren test

Mon Aug 07, 2006 10:24 pm

I am informed that I will probably not be allowed anywhere near the
Yantai siren when they perform their annual air raid siren test, now
said to be at 08:15, Tuesday 8-15-2006.

So my wife, a Chinese citizen, will try to get photographs with her
digital camera. She will wear her earplugs provided by Asiana Airlines!

I will be several hundred yards away at a monument on a nearby
hill to zoom in on the siren and hopefully get good sound - probably
much better than from where I was hoping to videotape the siren close-up.

Unfortunately, it will be an ordeal for her. She will sit on the back
of a bicycle and we will get as close to West Yantai Mountain as possible.
Then we will walk. It will be quite a climb for her.

That's dedication, risking a Chinese prison as a spy for the sake of taping a siren test.

Is the Yantai Mountain siren one of those "Elektro-Knadiger" sirens shown on this site? Good luck with the video. At least the sound will carry quite a ways, even if you can't get a good shot. This Yankee imperialist pigdog will looking forward to watching it.

Yantai siren make/model unknown.

Wed Aug 09, 2006 2:14 am

The siren is described as horizontal with a rotor\stator at each end.
(Wouldn't it be funny if it were the same Amercian make as my father's McCandless Township, PA volunteer FD?) (Sorry, I have not yet learned all the makes/models.)

Now, my brother-in-law, a member of the Communist Party,
plans to get close and take photos with a digital camera.
Best not to risk my wife getting into trouble and jeopardizing return to the US. (Also, she was exhausted by our rehearsal bike ride and then climb to the top of the hill.)

I will stage at a safe location east of the siren, near a monument,
(uh-oh, what if they are monitoring this e-mail?)
withe camcorder zoomed in on the siren. But with no tripod, there
will likely be too much movement even when I brace the camcorder
against something.

In case you did not read the Yantai siren post - the siren rises out of the
ground. Now all that is seen is a metal cover flush withe ground.

It is possible that if my brother-in-law took me there, they would be most happy and proud to show off their siren.
They would wonder why anyone would be stupid enough to have interest in a siren, let alone actually OWN one. (I should have brought a photo of
my 2t22.)
I would be happy to perform TLC on it - something they'd consider a boring chore - which they probably neglect - as with everything else here.

Or, they may also consider it a secret to be protected from a possible American sabotage.

But it was shown on TV after last year's test!!

Well, it's a good idea to plan ahead; I see you've done that already.

I had a little run in with some authorities tapeing sirens at the prison I live near back in June. Nearly got arrested and almost had my camera confinscated but they let me go after makeing me delete the pics and video in front of them.

I did go back there a few days ago and sussessfully taped another siren that was part of the prison. The day before the test, I surveyed the area for a spot where I could get a good view of the siren but far enough away that I didn't look too suspicious. I managed to take a few pictures on that day as well without looking suspicious. Even then, I was a little nervous on the actual test day and first started with the camera hidden nearby and me standing somewhere else in case I got caught. That turned out to be not necessary and I was able to get a closer video of the siren during the second part of the test.

Well, good luck; don't get busted like I did the first time. Especially in countries like China, you're probably guilty automatically if you get caught until you're judged innocent.

nice story

Dear Soundoff,

What is that monstrosity in your photo?
An engine-powered Victory siren?
Looks like 2 2t22s stacked but an air intake would be necessary
between them.

What a fun and a memorable story getting busted.

Are those 2001s for tornado warning or escape?

I enjoyed your links that I was able to view from here.

Thank you,

Lobter

We rarely get Tornados where I live (I'm from California) so those sirens are mainly to alert the surrounding communities of escape but they could be used for other warning purposes if the need arises. You can also read this old thread I posted the day I got busted.

Blastmaster on the old board photoshopped the Chrysler/2T22 stack picture in my avatar after I described what happened in the siren dream I had. I just kept it for a while. It was a pretty realistic dream reguarding what I saw in it. Not to hijack this discussion, I've posted my siren dream in another thread.

All I can remember about Elektro-Knadiger sirens is from what I read a long time ago about a siren made in the former Czechoslovakia and distributed throughout the Soviet Union for use as an air-raid siren. They are a copy of a Carter siren and they have (if I'm right) a 10hp motor.
