From April, 1996 "Governing," a magazine typically sent to local government administrators:
Anybody know what the situation is today in Sandy Spring, MD & Leesburg, VA?

Until reading your article I hadn't realized that sirens have been with us for
over 100 years. I just located this patent on a hand cranked siren which is proof that they really have been around for that long.

Anyway,
there are several things attacking sirens, sound problems has been addressed in a previous topic I can't find. Personally, I wish we had a fire department that used a siren. Unfortinally, it's localed in a suburban area.

I LOVE that cartoon, the tongue sticking out is the best.
As long as people gripe about sirens and take them down, there will be people like us who will put them back up and set 'em off again.

It's been my experience the same folks complaining about the noise are the first ones to complain to the city council when a tree branch falls in their yard after a garden t-storm demanding to know why the sirens wern't sounded. I would add most of these people also have numerous calls logged at the 911 center about barking dogs, parked cars, and burning leaves in the fall and are the same folks that call 911 asking why the sirens are going off on test day eventhough the sirens have been tested on the same day and time for 40 years.

Leesburg has two STH-10s, Station 1's siren sits atop Station 1 and Station 20's siren is on E Market St. I think they are still in use, but I'm not sure.
