"Most Shocking" siren installations

Fri Sep 04, 2009 3:42 am

I decided to start this topic after looking over some of the info in the Hamilton County siren survey that I got from Clayton...

Some of the things ASC found include:
Sirens mounted in locations that made them very difficult if not impossible to access for maintenance
A 2001 mounted flush with the tree line (will upload a photo if someone wants it)
A Thunderbolt with a tree or other plant growing out of the blower box (http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/zz24 ... nn/31a.jpg - photo from the survey)
A 2001 described by one surveyor as "the worst installation I've ever seen" - at the end of a side street on a hill in the woods blocked by overgrowth

What are some of the worst / strangest / least sensible setups you've seen? Provide photos if possible, and feel free to comment on the IQ of those responsible for installing/maintaining the sirens :D

Here's one. It looks like it's about to fall off the pole but the plant is doing fine!

I already posted this in the "highest mounted siren" thread a year or so ago, but it's still one of the oddest siren mountings I've seen so far.

The SD-10 in Center Point, Iowa is mounted on the water tower...the very extreme top of the water tower. I imagine it's quite fun to work on that siren.

Ive droven by that siren many times. What I wonder is how in the WORLD that small town got that siren up there! And Center Point is about gone. It's pretty much a ghost town.

I've seen a couple surprising/bad mounts including:

A Model 7 starting to be engulfed by a nearby tree in Paoli, WI. http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r218 ... 2008-1.jpg
A Thunderbolt with blower near top of pole. It tilts. I'm trying to get a better photo of this one. http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r218 ... 3286-1.jpg
A 2001 on a radio/cell phone tower in Mukwanago, WI.
Hornless Thunderbolt 1003 inside a clock tower. Blower is inside tower, seemingly.
2001 on police dept. building with loads of bars in the way in Ripon, WI. http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r218 ... MG2362.jpg
5 HP siren on somewhat worn tower right next to where plenty of vehicles drive next to in Junction City, WI. Siren and tower are gone.

That's all I can think of.

This one is my favorite, it looks like they went from small to medium to huge. How many sirens can you spot?

Nice. I spy 3 sirens in that last photo - a TBolt, a Sterling and one that I don't recognize :)

Some more unusual/strange installations from the survey photo collection:

TBolt with a blower box on the ground and controls in a wooden box (Indian Hill water tower):

Tilted TBolt (Clifton Elementary):

TBolt supported mainly by two planks (Queensgate near Colerain and Arlington):

Red model 5 "repainted" gray by birds... (Glendale):

Not really shocking, but a bit unusual...

GE Traffic light controller being used as a timer (for an SD-10, River Road a little ways west of Anderson Ferry):

You've all seen this picture before, its from Garden City, the 1003 has long been disconnected & if you look at the way they mounted it, the board from the blower is gonna break & if & WHEN it does, it will take both sirens down with it.
