Youtube video

Tue Oct 17, 2006 10:00 pm

Found this on Youtube today, which i might say is a very good video of a siren(s) that is a mystery to me. The ones in the background are most likely Whelens but the foreground siren sounds very mechanical but then has a voice to it as well, so probably a electronic that has a recorded mechanical sound. Not sure though....

here is another video that looks new as well on youtube

He says in the description that the mechanical siren, which is across the street, is part of Hiawatha, IA's siren system and the electronic sirens are part of the power plant's system. I'm gonna say that the electronic sirens are older style Whelen 4004s because if you compare that video with the Arlington, TX Whelen video they sound exactly the same. I'm also gonna guess that the mechanical siren is either a Federal Model 5, or an STH10.

The first video looks good, with many sirens in close proximity to each-other. There are Whelens, a Model 3 or Model 5, with a 2001 model doing the fastest wail that I've seen!

That fast wail is actually the older style 4004s attack mode sound. Notice how it cuts in and out at the beginning and end of the tests meaning it's electronic. 2001s in fast wail sound nothing like that.

It was simply the acoustics that overwhelmed me. Thanks, though.

I think Whelen should bring back that longer wind-down. The Wind-downs now are just to short(4 secs). It might be harder on the drivers especially with the low tone they produce for a long wind-down though. Awsome video.

Apple Valley's whelens do that really fast wail. I'm not sure what they do it for, but I can hear it from my house after the 2001 by my house winds down. Kinda creepy!
