The Siren Board

What are some strange places where you've seen sirens? I'm not just talking about the actual location of the siren, but also where it's mounted, etc.

The strangest place for me would be the Thunderbolt in Fort Thomas, Kentucky. It's at a catholic church/school, but it's actually mounted on the roof of the church itself, not the school. It's not the first time I've seen a siren at a church that has its own school, but it is the only time I've seen one on top of a church.

The local STH is on top of a railyard building. Right in the middle where everyone there works, too.

I've seen a few sirens installed right in the middle of residental areas in Hamilton County. In my opinion, I would like it, but most people I'm sure wouldn't like to be living next door to a siren.

There is a Thunderbeam here in Denver in the middle of a rail yard, which I never understood. There are also 2 or 3 locations with a 2001-DC and SD-10 about 200 feet apart.

Franklin, Tennessee has some sirens placed in some weird areas. For example, there is a Modulator 2008 on top of an enclosed staircase at a parking garage (I have recorded it, however the siren was messed up big time), a Modulator and a 2001 less than a mile away form each other that I saw myself just the other day (Alasiren1977 has a recording), a Modulator 1004 placed behind a two-story business building out in the middle of nowhere, and a few other weird locations.

Brentwood, Tennessee also has a few strange placements, including a 2001-SRN beside the road at the end of a driveway, a new 2001-SRNB pretty much in the middle of nowhere beside a small utility building, and a few other Modulators placed in some off-the-wall places. I'm sure there are plenty more, I haven't gotten around to finding them all and snapping pictures of them all. The first siren in the system was installed in 2000.

McEwen, Tennessee installed a system of 5 Sentry 3V8-H's/7V8's in 1999 that are all within a two-mile range. There is one placed beside a CO-OP building, another beside a church, and another less than 1/4 of a mile beside a fire department. Planning on catching a video of those soon.

One of the Nashville Thunderbolts was mounted atop the educational building of Eastland Baptist Church.

These sirens were silenced in the early 80s; many of them have since been removed. I don't know if the EBC one is still there as I don't get to that side of town very often.

Brentwood, TN has a 2001 located at the New Hope Community Church on Wilson Pike. It's on a pole in the church yard; almost hidden by trees.

Dunsmuir, California, has a Model 2 in the middle of the city cemetery.

Kalama, Washington, has an STH-10 in the middle of a railyard next to the Columbia River.

Mineral, California, has a Model 5 on the overhang of the town's only gas station. It is about ten feet above the store entrance.

Stockton, California, once had a Model 5 mounted on top of every public school building.

Canyon City, Oregon, recently moved their Screamer from its former perch on a cliff overlooking the town to their city water tanks, which are behind a hill in a remote area a couple of miles out of town.

In Omaha, Nebraska, St. Anthony's Church had a Thunderbolt on the roof of their school gym. It has been replaced by a T-128 on a pole next to the gym.

The only siren I've seen that I really considered as being in a weird place was in Ferryville, Wisconsin. They have a model 2 on the roof of a bar and grill.

Other things I find weird about Hamilton County:

In Norwood, there is a Thunderbolt on top of a Salvation Army thrift store.

In Downtown Cincinnati, there is a high pitched Thunderbolt 1000 on top of a condominium building. It must be there because the building used to be a school.

On UC's campus, there's a Thunderbolt 1000 on top of Calhoun Hall which is a dormitory building. I do find this rather unusual.

In Chattanooga, TN there's a Thunderbolt (now silent) atop the Belvoir Pharmacy on Brainerd Rd. It's mounted very LOW. I've never seen one mounted atop a pharmacy.
