The Siren Board

I didn't make it to Huntington Beach today, but I did follow through on my "personal" test here in Moorpark!!!

I set up my little Federal Model L on the railing overlooking the strawberry fields below the house, and ran an extension cord to a Variac. I used the Variac to slow the wind-up and down to mimic the bigger sirens. As you will see, the speed idea works great but the shrill pitch of this little siren can't hold a candle to the big guys. Watching my video, I see that I need some practice on that speed issue though... Unrealistically long wind-up.

One thing went wrong, but NO damage... I hadn't fastened the siren to the railing, so it wiggled its way off and fell on the deck. Luckily, it was only a 30" fall onto wood. So no harm done.

One of these days, I want to get a Thunderbolt mounted up there on that deck!!!! We have 3 phase power, so all I need is a T-Bolt.

How did you get 3 phase power on a residential home? if you weren't so far away i'd come right over... I got 5T's SD10's Federal 7 HP's... all in 3 phase... we could have a ball!

Good question! Reason is that on the property, there's a horse hospital with some big electrical equipment, including a water treadmill and a hotwalker. Those have big 20-HP electric motors. The house panel is actually on a delta leg of the 3-phase, but I can bring the whole service up here with not too much work

Anyone who wants to bring a siren, just PM me and I'll see what we can do!

WOW nice deck.. just be glad it didnt fall off the other end of the deck... then you woulda heard a some what half a** doopler effect.

Nice that you have an open area at your ranch to use for a siren testing field. With access to 3 phase power as you mentioned earlier; you could opeate anything up to probably a T-135 or even some of Blasty's creations if you could get one on your deck.

Anyway, you may want to practice with the windup on the "L" to make it sound better. The way (and location) you ran it reminds me of the video where some guys in Upland got a Federal 500T in their backyard and sounded it for New Years. Your windup sounds almost exactly like their 500T on a roto-phase converter.

Thanks for the compliments! I'll fool around with it, and maybe have a better day next time...

That siren is still missing the intake horn, so I might experiment with diffrent shapes to see what sounds best. That is, unless I can get a correct original horn, which I prefer.
