Re: Mystery Moran, Texas siren

That's a 2nd Generation Federal Electric Type Mach. B, dates are kinda obscured but I'd estimate from around 1920-1923. Here's what they look like up close:

Re: Mortlake Fire Co. Brooklyn, CT

That just a newer-style Federal Model 2. The housing doesn't quite match the siren core; Fedelcode-era 2's had longer legs that put the chopper between the upper 2 skirts.

Re: Question about my Edwards model 315 siren

I want to say Federal gives the Model A a 5 minute duty cycle. I don’t believe the smaller motors used in A’s have a fan for cooling so I’d be hesitant to run it longer than that, and give it at least 15 minutes to cool back down.

Re: FS Model A rotor help!

What kind of Model A do you have; can you post pictures of the motor? Depending on the motor style you can easily open it up to inspect the innards. If it’s anything later than ~1950s they started to use 2 shells pressed together which makes taking them apart a bit more involved.

Re: Scans of the British General Electric Catalogues from 1948 & 1952

Very interesting. Do you happen to know the relationship between BGE and General Electric here in the states? Since Federal Electric was started as a branch of GE (IIRC), I wonder if they pulled from Federal’s playbook; the design of the 5-mile siren is extremely similar to the early dual-rotor Fede...

Re: Vintage siren photos thread

Unknown 2HP siren atop the grist mill in Elkader, IA; photo taken in 1925. The siren was installed in March of 1921 to replace a fire bell, and saw its demise in March of 1939 when the mill burned down. The siren was replaced by a Fedelcode Mach. 5 that still serves to this day.
