Castle Castings Siren page now on Facebook

Please have a look...
I've started a page for all enthusiasts of the Castle Castings Siren and other UK air-raid sirens.
Plenty of photos on there, and hopefully plenty more information can be shared on there too...

Dan, I would say that your old siren IS of Castle Castings heritage... Castle Castings sirens have Brooks motors (Brooks-Crompton-Parkinson part of Hawker-Siddley) and your example has a rather early Brooks design almost resembling the old Gents motors of the 1940s. The rotor and stator castings are...

Shame you let it go...
You wanna get hold of a Castle siren- I wont be getting rid of mine any time soon!

I just need to re-wire my Castles to their respective 3-phase plugs, which I now have but I have no idea on wiring with 3 lives and 1 earth...

OK, everyone... The thread issue HAS been sorted! After being laughed at by "suppliers" after mentioning BSF, I have found a brilliant little company called "L&S Engineers" who do 7/8 BSF in BOTH LEFT and RIGHT hand threads in the form of wheelnuts. I've just had to hack them...

I've been told my someone with a thread gauge that it's a 7/8 BSF (British Standard FINE) thread.

I think I've found some 7/8 BSF nuts on Amazon- including a L/H one!

Otherwise, this is an incredibly rare old-skool thread nowadays...
Som suppliers giggled when I mentioned "7/8 BSF" :-(

Castle Castings Siren Techical Help: SHAFT NUTS

I'm currently cosmetically restoring one of two 3-phase Castle Castings sirens I have. After spending hours heating/hitting/soaking the outside locking nuts on the motor shaft, we had to cut the outer nuts off in the end. I have one of the original right-hand threaded nuts, which is back on the shaf...

Nah- it can't be a Carter- the motor's way too small! (Remember- the "Carter" siren, being of WW2 vintage, has a large motor capable of 4hp, where as the later Brooks-Compton motor used on the Castle sirens is smaller and equally as powerful) As for Norfolk keeping their sirens... Unfortun...

Well, I've found out who owns this siren... It's owned by the Mundesley Lifeboat people who used it as a call-out siren untill recently (hence the antenna mounted on the pole). I've enquired about it's future and apparently it's staying in situ and not awaiting the scrapper. Still none the wiser abo...
