Mystery siren at BGM

Wed Sep 28, 2011 1:50 am

I work at an airport, and this siren is on the former fire department building. It was deactivated a few months ago, and it is unclear whether or not it still works. We plan on restoring it for a local volunteer fire department who are very excited to receive it. The control box says: Type 4, 5 HP, Serial # X83711, 208/220V, 60 cycles, 1 phase, and 36 amps. The airport opened around 1952 if that helps at all.

Thanks for your help! I'll keep you guys updated as we make progress.

Edit: It would help if I had the link.

If that thing is single phase and only pulling 36A on 240V, then it is definitely not a Model 5, at least not like any one I've ever seen. I have a single phase Model 5 and the tag on it says it pulls 60A at 240V. I'm thinking that it's either a Model 3, or a Model 5 with some kind of strange, smaller motor.

Look the size of the rotor compared to the rest of the housing. It looks smaller and narrower than either of the model 5 's I have.

It looks alot like the mystery siren we found not far from Ian's house.

Would the size of the housing be part of the answer? It's only about 3 feet tall at the most. We guessed the weight including the pallets to be around 300 pounds.

Is there a source we can go to to get a copy of the builders plate or any other parts we need? We've never done this before, and want to do it right the first time. Thanks again for all your help everyone!

Well, I was completely wrong. The Union Co. Fire Dept. actually has a Model 7T. I never paid attention to the sound until today when I went to the station to record the noon blast...then I forgot my camera. I'll get it some other time.
What happened when Napoleon went to Mt. Olive? Popeye got pissed.

Thanks for the awesome up-close pic of the Federal Signal STH-10.

I assumed the siren atop the fire station would be involved with fire station-type duties, but now I'm wondering if the siren would also be used for severe weather? any ideas/guesses?
I dont think thats an sth-10 because of the rounded top, it looks to me lik an american signal corporation tempest 121 with horns mounted.
