Car accident in Tulsa

Thu Dec 28, 2006 1:08 pm

About 5 minutes ago on the news I saw a car that ran into a road sign and then into a pole with a Whelen WS-3016. The siren is damaged, and I don't think it can be repaired.

See if you might be able to find a video clip of it.

Ouch. I say that Whelen is dead for good  I wonder how fast he was going to knock that siren clean off the pole?

I would be pretty sad if this happened near me. I think that the main housing could be repaired by resin or epoxy.

Hmm. I am going to ahead and say that the older whelens like that are very top heavy, which would make it easier to knock them off.
He died.

Yes, i would say by the general large size of the old whelen 3016s, that they were quite heavy. And that would probably have been enough force by the car hitting the pole to snap the siren speaker head from its oscillator.

Well, the poles are 31 years old and have been decaying, so that explains how it fell off so easily...

But the pole's upright. It might have moved enough to snap the speaker heads off the oscillator. That speaker head is a pretty big moment arm and would really load the connection between the head and oscillator. Does anyone know the connection detail?

I wonder if they ever caught the man? If so, I'd fine him the cost of a new unit+install+labor.

Sure, restitution is always part of a sentence.
