Christmas Trip Siren Sightings

Sun Dec 31, 2006 6:11 pm

On Dec. 22, my aunt and I travelled from Leavenworth County, Kansas to Lawerence County, Indiana to visit one of my other aunts for Christmas. When we passed through St. Louis I spotted a lot of Whelen 3016s and a few Whelen Vortexes or 4000 series sirens. From there on I spoted a few more Whelens (4000 series and/or Vortexes) and one or two Federal Modulators.
When we went from Lawerance County to Indianapolis to pick up my dad at the airport, I saw a few more Whelen 4000 series and/or Vortexes.

Now back to the subject on the St. Louis Whelens. While sighting some of the 3016s, I noticed some of them were painted yellow. How common are yellow 3016s? Are they painted at the factory or do the customers paint them?

I think that the 3016 sirens did have some examples bought by Civil Defense, so Civil Defense ordered them yellow. Also, the sirens were made with a yellow housing at the factory, because the color is impregnated into the fiberglass, and you can only do that at the factory.
