Have YOU been beside a siren when it went off?

Thu Jan 04, 2007 1:24 am

I have. When I was in elementary school the county would test thier sirens every first Wednesdayof the month(still do), a Thunderbolt is in the back of my old school right beside the GYM. I had P.E every day at 9:45, the sirens sounded at 10:00. So I got my ears blasted off every first Wednesday of the month by either bieng in the GYM when it when off or on the playground or walking back behind the school to play kick ball which the ramp to the field in the back went right beside the siren. One time I faked being sick and got to stay in from P.E. I looked out the window and got to catch it's rotation. :P That was cool. It was scary when I was RIGHT beside it when it went off.

I been about 75 feet from a Whelen Vortex R-4 when it went off and it scared me crapless, this was before I was interested in sirens when I was roughly 11 years old, and I was playing with some friends beside the tornado siren which I didn't even know was there. It was test day in Tullahoma (2nd Saturday of the month) and it went off for 3 minutes. My friends and I being stupid and young did not move away and it really hurt my ears, they were still ringing several hours later. So for those of you who say Whelens aren't loud well think again, that was well over 130db because I was less than 100 feet from it (they are 129dB@100). Heres a recording I got of one of our Whelen Vortex R-4 sirens http://media.putfile.com/TullahomaTN-Tornado-siren-Test I was approximatly 100 feet from the siren in a church parking lot across the street from it. Hopefully the sirens will be tested this month and I will get another recording from 100 feet with my new recorder :D .

I've been underneath a 2001, and 100 feet from a T-1000 set at a high voltage.

All recordings on this page....

The recordings on this page were done on a Sunday afternoon
and I was across the street about 100 feet away. The county guy
who put up the pole and built the blower pad ran the siren in
attack and alert so I could record it. The day we hooked it up
we must have run the siren at least 5 or 6 times.

And dozens of other sirens over the years too....

I've been right under a 3v8 as it was wailing, about 50 feet from a 5, 50 feet from a 3T22 in attack, 20 feet away in a 2 story building on axis with a WS 2016, and of course many times with in 2 feet of my 2T.

I once brought my GCS Model 2 into the shop I worked at after hours and connected it to the 240 volt line while wearing industrial ear plugs. It was still quite loud standing 20 feet away, and so much air came out of it that it cleared all the dust from the floor for 10 feet in all directions!

Check out my post from yesterday, "Reading, Ohio T-Bolt"; that was fairly close, but I used protective earmuffs until the winddown.
