I've been underneath when sounding...
Elmira fire station STH-10
Corunna Model 2
Corunna ATI HPSS-32 at Sir John A. School

The STH-10 and the ATI were the loudest, and did leave an ear ring.

When I was in elementary school the county would test thier sirens every first Wednesdayof the month(still do), a Thunderbolt is in the back of my old school right beside the GYM. I had P.E every day at 9:45, the sirens sounded at 10:00. So I got my ears blasted off every first Wednesday of the month by either bieng in the GYM when it when off or on the playground or walking back behind the school to play kick ball which the ramp to the field in the back went right beside the siren. One time I faked being sick and got to stay in from P.E. I looked out the window and got to catch it's rotation. :P That was cool. It was scary when I was RIGHT beside it when it went off.

Sorry to sound off topic here, but what was your excuse?

I woundn't say I was next to a siren but I got pretty close (across the street) to a low mounted 2001 while the Chino Prison was testing. You guys would be wondering if I can still hear clearly. Look ontop of the "shed" right behind the power pole. I didn't have any hearing protection at that time and if I walked about eight feet closer from where I was standing in this video, my ears would start to buzz.

I did a drive by the same siren as well last November with the window slightly opened. Yes, it was sounding in this picture I grabbed off my November video

4th of July

I was in Lebanon NJ atht e 4th of July. I was in the firehouse below the siren. It was some kind of fire call because it kept on going and going. I didn't know anything other than a round can mean something other than a test. I didn't have any earplugs . So that was pretty intence for me. This was way before joining EMS.

I've had my ears blasted standing in a football field about 300 feet from the throat of a 10hp Thunderbolt 1000T. I've also stood right in front of and underneath the horn of a Thunderbolt 1000 and in an alleyway with a Model 5 blaring behind the wall (that's how I got my recording of my town's noon siren) and stood right next to a blaring 115V Sterling 2V8 without a housing.
