Low mounted Sirens in US

I'm going to try to head up there today or tomorrow and get some better pics of it. When I called up there and talked to the lady with the town she flipped the switch on it and growled it while we were on the phone. It winds up really slow but it took several minutes for it to coast to a stop. Kind of made me wonder if they are running it on 120 volts. She said the top has been missing for at least 10 years.

Found this while mapping out Spartanburg, SC's sirens. It is #16. Fin-Backed Whelen 4004/Vortex. #17 is also a low Sentry 3V8

Nice find. That's almost as low as those Whelens in Sedona, AZ.

Pendergrass, GA has one downtown thats pretty low. I've tried posting the link to show you guys on google maps, but it points me to a blank page. If you search Pendergrass, GA on google maps, it points directly down to a little building; the siren is behind that building and it's a fin back Vortex not maybe 20 foot off the ground.

The city of Talmo, GA also has one really low to the ground, at the fire department. I've unsuccessfully tried posting that one, too.

Ah, some of Jackson County's low mounted Whelens! I've passed by the one in Talmo before, that thing is ridiculously low.

Slightly OT: I've also noticed some Hornets have been popping up here and there in Jackson County as of last time I was through there. Saw one just off of Hwy 60 west of Pendergrass, which just recently showed up on the new Google Maps satellite imagery: http://goo.gl/maps/Zdaf

So why are these so low? Spartanburg and Jackson County do not appear to be very mountainous or hilly areas.
