Pleasant Valley, MO Siren bites the dust

Wed May 22, 2013 12:29 pm

Our Thunderbeam was demolished by 70+ MPH winds during a thunderstorm event Sunday Evening. I'm really surprised it blew over considering how many storms it's been through over the years. What's even more surprising is they're planning to replace it. I work for the City, and we're surrounded by Kansas City, MO, Liberty, and several other jurisdictions (who maintain fairly good-sized 2001/Thunderbolt siren networks). Those alone should adequately cover us. According to this news release: http://fox4kc.com/2013/05/21/storm-knoc ... residents/ they've budgeted $25,000 for a replacement. I wonder what they could possibly get for that price tag? I've heard the 2001's cost upwards of $35-36K a piece. God I hope they steer clear of ATI!

If i recall correctly, Pleasant Valley is just north of Claycomo. Much of Claycomo and the surrounding area (read: KC Metro) are mostly federal sirens. I wouldn't be too surprised to seeing them go with federal as well. However, I would not be in the least bit amazed seeing them go with an electronic siren. P.V., Mo is only a few miles of land in their township/city, just a lot of trees and hills in that part of the region.

edit; Just watched the FOX4 video report of the siren... that thing is pretty much totaled.

Yep, I drove by there yesterday and it's damaged beyond repair. I work for the City government (won't say which dept out in public forum), but they'll likely go with whatever model is "affordable". Personally, I would hope they select the 2001-130 or Modulator, but that decision is below my pay grade. You are correct, KCMO, Claycomo, and Liberty use mostly Federal sirens (Claycomo has a 2001-DC, KC, MO is all 2001's, and Liberty is a mix of 2001's and Thunderbolts). One siren will provide more than enough coverage for our area.

It will probably be just a 2001.

I sure hope not. Hasn't Blue Valley been installing 508s lately?

Liberty still has that Thunderbeam by the Quik Trip, right?
Just because you're offended, doesn't mean you're right.

That Thunderbeam you're referring to actually belonged to Pleasant Valley, which is the one that blew over. That was located at the Fire Station right up the hill from Quiktrip. Liberty only has 2001's and Thunderbolts.

They've been selling more 2001-130 and Eclipse sirens than 508s.

Well, the Thunderbeam was replaced, but not with anything brand spankin' new. Instead, they put up a 2T22. I would've snapped a pic, but traffic prevented that from happening. Replacing a cold war-era siren with another cold war-era siren...yeah, that makes sense
