Question: Are all P-10s 9/12 dual toned. I don't think I've ever seen a single tone one.

No you will find a single tone out in the wild.

P-10s only came in dual tone (as far as I know) because the single tone chopper put a heavy strain on the motor which caused problems, so the only single tone Penetrators are 15s.

How could a single tone chopper put stress on the motor? This just doesn't add up to me.

Because the single tone rotor is 1 inch taller than the dual tone and moves WAY more air. The more air you move the more horsepower it takes to run it. The 10 horse was already maxed out trying to run the dual tone rotor.

IMO they all should have came with 15 horse motors. You can listen to a 10 horse penetrator and a 15 horse penetrator and tell just how hard they pushing that 10 horse motor. When a motor can't reach rated RPM because of the load that is on it it's called overload.

They didn't really start having problems until they switched from Doerr to Baldor motors. The Doerrs were BIG motors and could take a beating. They did have some problems with broken rotor bars on some of the early ones but got those ironed out.

When they switched to the Baldor they went to a smaller frame motor that didn't have the heat dissipating ability of the monster Doerr. Baldor made up for it with higher temp rated motor insulation. They still had rotor bar problems after the switch to Baldor for some reason.

There is an 8/12 P-10 in Woodstock IL that someone has a video of. But I believe that it was an Allertor before the original shoud broke. So they replaced it with a Penatrator horn.
Upcoming recordings: undetermined

Yeah Fulton overhauled that one and put the penetrator shroud on it.

Is that the same for Thunderbolts?

No, thunderbolts have interchangeable rotors. They can also be placed in Model 2s/2Ts
