Redstone Arsenal siren hunt 8-4-13

Mon Aug 05, 2013 10:11 pm

I went out to Redstone Arsenal with my dad to learn how to drive and get pictures of some old traffic lights on the arsenal. I decided to get a few pictures of sirens on the arsenal as well.
First we have the only remaining set of Altec Lansing Horns:

Next was the ASC E-class on Goss Road. Sorry about the out of focus pictures.

Then there was the 2001-SRN on Goss Road.

Finally we went to the old Model 2/2t on Goss Road. It appears to be out of service because some of the wires to it are cut.

...What?

Those Altec Lansing horns remind me of what mental image came to my head when I thought of tornado siren when I was little. Wonder how loud they are?

Probably not to loud. There was another set on the roof of the building my dad works in. They are being replaced with speakers that look like the average outdoor speaker.

Oddly enough, I had the same mental impression of a tornado-siren when I was a kid.

They remind me of the very early Hormman ELS arrays (they used the HLS XXX horns and connected them to drivers) mixed with those Finnish sirens (Instoma?).

Altec Lansing used to do professional grade speakers, very loud ones. Actually they were meant for cinema/theatres.

They probably decided to use them as a siren since they were known for incredible output.
