Barrow County, GA considers phasing out siren system

Mon Oct 28, 2013 1:51 pm

Most the sirens in Barrow county aren't that old. They have a mix of Whelens and Federals.

How could it possibly cost 10 grand apiece to fix them? No, they're not old, at all. Auburn/Carl's sirens are all Vortex R4's and Winder added the Eclipse-8H just a few years ago. They have 5 sirens that I know of; the Eclipse at the fire department, a 2001 across at a neighborhood from the high school, a 2001 at the VFW, a 2001 at the Health Department and the old Model 2 from the fire department at Fort Yargo somewhere. I can't believe they're considering it.

:wtf:
In the words of Dr. Robotnik: "Why, Why, WHY!?!"
I question the people that say sirens are outdated. The best way, IMHO, to warn people is by using the tech. and sirens together. I want to know what's worng with these sirens; that's a lot of money.

UPDATE!!

Here is an updated story on Winder's selection for alerting: NIXLE. NIXLE is NOT that great of a service...and they should keep the sirens up and going. It can't honestly cost that much to maintain them. Nothing is wrong with them, just a few dated 2001's, a Model 2 at Fort Yargo, and a "just a few years old" Eclipse 8H at the fire station. All I have to say is really?...really....really?

Sigh, when will people ever learn that sirens and Reverse911 systems work TOGETHER. One is not able to replace the other. The $10,000 a year they will spend on that service can maintain WAY more sirens than what they currently have. On top of that you still have to get people to sign up for the service, which has always been and always will be a problem.

I wonder just how much they have actually spent on maintaining the sirens?

They can't have spent much. They only have a few sirens:

St Anthonys Drive and Midland Avenue intersection

Lee Street at Easter Seals organization
https://maps.google.com/maps?q=winder+g ... 5,,2,-7.86

Highway 82 at the Barrow County Administration office complex

Winder Fire Department

The Model 2 was supposedly moved from the fire department and placed in Fort Yargo, then there's the elusive vehicle siren in a box at the city pond. All in all, they have pretty decent coverage. Barrow County is not fully covered but most cities at least have 1 or 2 sirens. Auburn/Carl has at least 3 Whelens that I know of, Statham has a Model 2 and a Vortex, Bethlehem has a Model 2 and Dacula has a Vortex.
