You're thinking of this style box. Correct me if I'm wrong but this is used on all non-voice capable Whelen sirens.

So while we're on the topic, what the heck is this? It's on the right side of the cabinet, and can be found on all three types pictured above. Austin had an idea that it may be some sort of battery meter/gauge.

It's an LED diagnostic display for quick confirmation of proper operation of the siren without opening the cabinet. See page 21 of the 2800 manual:

http://www.whelen.com/install/135/13580.pdf

Your pic looks like it's reading red red red.

It may be good you took that picture. Going by the manual, the first red indicates AC power (good), the next one indicates at least one blown driver or failed amp (bad!), and the third one indicates rotation (overridden I'm sure).

A normal panel should be red yellow red green red going by the book. And granted, this one might be okay; it is a bit hard to tell from the picture.

Interesting...

I think I've seen something like that on a Vortex in Phenix City.

The 2nd picture looks like it's from a 28 or 2910 possibly. The bigger sizes have 4 batteries instead of 2. The older ones had 2 stacked batter compartments with separate doors. Now it looks like they use one big battery box for the larger sirens.

The vortexes that we service have the single door cabinets. Both are 440's but one got a front panel upgrade and is now a 560.

Wish they had the status lights though.
