Surry Power Station mini-hunt, 11/19/13

Tue Nov 19, 2013 10:15 pm

Went out on a whim today to shoot some photos of a few Surry Power Station 2806s near me.

First off, siren #22, at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Richneck Road in Newport News. The radio antenna is at the top of the larger pole to the left of the siren. I have no idea why they did that, but I have a nagging suspicion a Sentry may have been up there before the Whelen came along.

Next, we have another siren (number unknown) at the intersection of Jefferson Avenue and Yorktown Road. The lighting was poor from where this photo was taken, but it's extremely difficult to get to this siren, especially considering that it's on the edge of a power substation.

And finally, we have siren #11, located at Charles E. Brown Park in the village of Lackey in York County. This one is new to me - I found it about an hour before leaving the house. I very quickly became enamored with this siren's surroundings, and so I will (knock on wood) be filming this leaning tower of Whelen during the next quarterly test on December 11th.

Some of you commented on the system's unusual control boxes back in September. I thought I might put their size into perspective. For reference, I'm about 5"7' tall. (Please excuse my goofiness.)

Bonus shot: insane perspective!

That's everything from today...but there may be more in the near future. Stay tuned.
