Sirens on the Calgary, AB Fire HQ

Wed Jan 29, 2014 4:41 am

This is a picture of the Calgary, Alberta Fire Headquarters in 1960. There is a Sterling or Carter type siren on top of the hose tower.

Rotating CLM now on there in 1966.

Just a friendly reminder of "wow, things have changed". So, do you know what they did with both sirens? I can imagine they scrapped the carter, but the CLM might still be there (fire departments keep their sirens sometimes, in storage, etc.)

Impossible to say, as most CLM's were removed and scrapped in the 90s. It is possible that Carter-like siren was a remnant leftover of the WW2 air raid siren network across the country, and probably went the same route as the CLM's.

There is a rotating CLM still up in Leduc, Alberta. The only one I know of in Canada still standing outside of Toronto.

It looks like the Calgary Fire HQ has upped anchor, sailed into the financial district, with the shutters open (the gun ports) and is about to attack, just like the Crimson Permanent Assurance scene at the start of the Monty Python film The Meaning of Life.

Thanks for posting this, really interesting. Most were scrapped in the 90's- early 2000's but there are still quite a few around, just hidden. Just two years ago I talked to an a small town/city in BC and they still had a system of CLMs (4-6 units) installed and had just contacted the DND to remove them, which they did. I discovered a Model 2 air raid siren in Mississauga ON last year on a major road basically in the middle of the city. There's not many left but they are scattered around.

Just to add to the cool photos, 20/24 port CLM on the old Clarkson ON fire hall:

Good lord that siren is massive.
My knowledge excels on the Federal Thunderbolt siren and SiraTone EOWS sirens. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The last time I was in Nelson, BC, about ten years ago, I counted three vertical CLM's.
Lex orandi, lex credendi, lex vivendi.

Yes it is, its amazing how the times change. The fire hall and whole area at that time is almost completely build over.
