STH-10 and elusive Model 5 in Philipsburg, PA

Tue Feb 18, 2014 10:04 pm

Is the dark-blue STH-10 on the roof of Reliance Fire Co in Philipsburg, PA modified? Up until a few years ago, it looked like a normal STH-10, but then it started looking like it had custom horns. What happened to the original horns? I hear that the STH-10 is actually for Hope Fire Co, not Reliance. I also hear that Philipsburg has a Model 5 for Reliance on top of the Borough Hall. I have never found that siren. Is it hidden in the bell tower? Where exactly is it?

Without a current picture of the siren it would be hard to say, I looked on Google Streetview and the Birds Eye view on Bing Maps... Streetview shows a normal looking STH-10, Bing Maps shows a little dot (not much help). As for the Model 5, your inquiry sparked me to search on Google for it. It would appear that it has been taken down, it used to be on the roof of the City Hall in the back mounted on a steel platform. I would have never seen it myself but happened to be looking out the back window while riding up to Bradford for something, it was silver in color.

That street view is old. Look on Reliance's facebook at a more current picture, and you will see that the STH-10 has been modified. How long ago did you last see the Model 5? I hear that those two sirens were timed in such a way that when one was winding down the other was winding up.

Just looked at all of the pics on thier facebook page, the only picture I saw that included the siren was the awesome "Aerialscope looking back from the bucket" picture that they seem to love so much. In that picture the siren appears to still have round horns but there is snow on them or around them... that is the only thing I saw that looked different. The last time I saw the Model 5 was 2006, I have heard the same story about the timing of the sirens also. I am glad you directed me over to the Reliece's Facebook page, it appears that Chester Hill bought the E-one engine from Greenock out by Pittsburgh. Have to add that to my list of apparatus to photograph this year!

There is a picture from December 16, 2013 with the siren in the background. That is where you can tell it was modified. On another discussion here, someone says the Model 5 may still be somewhere in Philipsburg. You're welcome for me directing their FB page to you.

The bell tower on the Borough Hall or on Hope Fire Co? I have seen pictures of the Borough Building's tower and cannot see a siren in there.

The Hope Fire Company doesn't have a belltower so it has to be the borough hall, BUT I know for a fact it was on the back of the building which would mean they would have had to disconnect it, re-route the wires to the belltower, and mount it. Also photo evidence is there that shows no siren in the belltower.... Whom did you speak to up there allert55 and what organization were they with??

I wonder if they took the housing off and the siren without the housing is too small to really be seen
