Here's the speaker array I was talking about. Snapped the pics today. If you wanna tick that one on the map, it's the big building at Ouellette Ave and Wyandotte Street. Sorry, the previous address was a little off. lol

Definitely seems like some Master Blaster variant to me.

Don't know if you want to keep it on the map but I passed through Lavigne, Ontario last week and the siren on top the fire department has been removed.

I live in Windsor, Ontario too and I have seen this siren several times. I have contacted Windsor's emergency manager (Fire Chief Tome Lee and he hasn't responded to me yet.)

SirenMadness,

I got an email from the Emergency Manager (Tome Lee). He said

"I spoke with the property manager at the Cencourse building in regards to the photo you sent me and she informed me that she doesn’t really know what the object is but it may have something to do with the ham radio operators that rent space in the building. I have asked her for contact information so I can follow up with them and when I get it I will let you know."

He also said this when I asked him about the rumor that the city is making a siren map,

"I have no information on any map which would indicate locations of sirens. As mentioned in an earlier email, I know options for mass notification are being considered but until a report goes in front of council, I am not able to comment further."

He said he will foward any new info to me when he gets it.

"Once I speak to the ham operators at the Cencourse, I will forward any information in regards to the object on the roof."

I will be sure to post the next email he sends me.

Hey EC! Great to know there's other siren nuts here in Windsor!

As for that speaker array, it does seem to have served some mass-notification purpose a long time ago. As per what some older people have told me, Windsor did at one time have a system of sirens in place which got taken down. I do remember seeing in the wooded area where Oulette merges with Dougal a wooden double-pole platform; I wonder as to whether it belonged to a siren at one point.

Is there any industry nearby that might have once required a siren to warn of industrial accidents? Could be a master blaster or something similar, and it looks fairly old. Windsor definitely had a siren system from the Cold War, probably consisting of CLMs or Mobil Directo's. But as for a speaker array siren, industry would be the most logical option. Sarnia upgraded their Mobil Directo's or CLMs to ACA 6000s in the 1980s, so possibly Windsor did something similar.

In the downtown area there's no major industry that I know of, well at least not for the past thirteen years I've been in Windsor. I know there is a BASF plant a little further west; maybe that's why the siren was put in place.

SirenMadness,

I'm assuming the Master Blaster type siren on the cencourse building was used in the Cold War. I'm also assuming it was gonna cost the city LOADS of money to take it down from there so they just left it. I know that the EM said that the infrastucture of the sirens were removed so I'm not sure it could be put back into service.

Makes me wonder, how many other sirens could have potentially been left in place over Windsor.

Indeed, I would think that they city took most of them down a long time ago because they were not on top of high buildings. *off topic* I know when I asked what kind of Mass Notification options they were exploring I was told reverse 911 was the main option they were looking at.
