Up close and personal with an ACA Screamer 105

This is all very interesting. The brochure seems to show the chopper as being in the screen, with nothing below, while the pictures clearly show it as having an 8 port chopper below the screened in top section. Dave is a respectable, knowledgeable person, so I'm going to take his word for it.


How far is this place from Altoona, Dave? Maybe I could get up there and record it if you can't find the time. I still have yet to use my new-fangled recording gear on a siren. Nobody tests the damn things around here. Although, I have heard rumor that Cambria County has recently implemented a countywide test schedule. Can't say for sure though.

Yea over here in Cambria County we test our sirens at 11:00AM on the first Saturday of the month, as well as Somerset tests theirs 12:30PM same day.

Ahh that's awesome! My band practices in Boswell, so I'm through Cambria and Somerset on a fairly regular basis. Are there any 2T22s or dual tone Thunderbolts in Cambria or Somerset counties? I'm DYING to hear either in person.

Hell I'd be happy to hear any siren. I've only ever been up close to a siren while it was sounding ONCE in my entire life, and it was this past summer. I was driving past Lakemont VFD when their SD-10 wound up.

Well I heard Richland Twp. still uses their SD-10, and yes there are 3T22s and one 2T22. The first one is in East Conemaugh Boro behind the station, the second is in East Taylor Twp. on top of the fire hall, the 3rd one is in Ebensburg which is behind the station, which has a broken damper in which only the lower stator makes the noise, and the 3T22 is in Colver which has screens on the projectors. The 2T22 is located in Loretto Boro on the roof of the fire house, I think it's a single phase since it doesn't go full speed. And there is a Thunderbolt 1000 in Jackson Twp. in Vinco where their fire hall is. Here are pics of the 6 sirens.

Stand right next to a ground-level one while it's sounding. No amount of rollercoasters or skydiving can beat that rush.

Since this thread is resurrected, I'll take this opportunity to ask, did anyone ever record the Screamer 105?

Normally I gripe and get mad when someone bumps an old thread, but in this case I am glad it got bumped. Here is the deal (or lack there of I am afraid), I ventured back up to the Wilkes-Barre area last year and decided a run over to Exeter Park was in order to see it back on it's pole. I went to the yard where it was to be put up and found nothing, no siren on a pole and sadly no siren in the yard. The traffic lights were still there, the electrical stuff was still there but no siren. My wife and I actually got locked in the yard by a gate and had to get help from a worker who was just leaving, I had to do ALOT of talking to get out of the worker calling the police for trespassing. I explained what I was there for and dropped the name of the fire chief I talked to who owned the place. Of course I was now treated like a criminal so the wife and I high tailed it out of there (guess how happy my wife was...) and headed over to the firehouse to see if it was up there. Nothing at the firehouse either, I have a sinking feeling in my stomach that this siren was done away with. Adding to that sinking feeling is that the Exter Park Fire Department merged with another department so they are technically no more, so I don't know what the status of this siren is anymore but I suspect it might have gone to siren heaven to join the other Banshee 105 that used to be at the Swoyersville #1 Fire Department in that same area.

That's very unfortunate... This also brings up the question for me of if those Soundmaster 125s in Illinois are still up and running? I've always been wondering and it'd be great to hear one of those.
