Mystery siren in Round Hill, Virginia

Fri Mar 14, 2014 1:41 am

The siren on top of the Round Hill VFD is hidden inside a cupola. I hear there used to be an Allertor there, but I never saw it and am assuming that the Allertor was part of DC's old system. I don't think you could fit an Allertor in a cupola, so my guess is that it is either a Model 2/3/5/7 or an STH-10. But, many of the firehouses in Loudoun County used to have Allertors (some still do), so maybe it is an Allertor for all I know. Could you fix an Allertor in one direction and put it inside a cupola? In your opinion, what kind of siren is it? I have never heard it myself.

The cupola looks a bit small to fit an allertor into. It might, but it would be a tight fit. A Model 5 would seem most fit to nestle in there. One way to find out... sit by the fire station until they get a call, the siren activates, and sha-bang, you know what it is.

Allertors are huge. It would take a BIG cupola.

I'd have to agree with sirendude2012's assessment. The largest thing I could see hiding in there would be a Model 5. It's simply too small for anything much bigger than that.

Would a Model 2 be a good fit in there as well?

Is an STH-10 bigger than a Model 5, or could it fit in there?

So, an STH-10 could fit in there? How do a 12-port Model 5 and an STH-10 sound different? If it is a Model 5 up there, do you think it has it's housing or is "naked?" I bet a Model 2 is another good guess about what could be up there.

How do an STH-10 and a Model 5 sound different? I've always thought STHs were more ear-piercing than Model 5s. Am I correct?
