Waldport, Oregon Discontinues Tsunami Sirens

Wed Jun 05, 2013 4:15 am

According to the city's website Waldport, Oregon has discontinued using their tsunami warning sirens in favor of a reverse-911 system.

Other cities on the Oregon coast have been installing or replacing old sirens recently. Hopefully Waldport doesn't start a trend in the other direction.

They had a few Tbolts. Wonder what will become of them?

According to the youtube test video they have already been removed. They were having some maintenance issues anyways. Back when the recording was taken in 2007 one of the three sirens didn't sound and another one had a broken rotator.

This was a frankly stupid decision. Waldport's downtown area, where over half of its residents live, is built on sandy soil only about eight feet above sea level.

Maintenance is no excuse to leave 2,000 people in danger of being inundated by the next big one. Hopefully, they will be roasted over this.

VASirens - I don't keep up with the models of electronic sirens, since I couldn't care less about them, but the one in your avatar - a Whelen, I believe - is identical to the siren on Waldport's fire station, having replaced a Model 5 back in the 90's. That is probably the only siren they still have. The only other Thunderbolt I know of in Oregon is/was at a fire station near Mayger up in Columbia County and was part of the Trojan system.

To bring back a post from last year the sirens are fine. They also have a whelen on the fire station so when the new systems fail they can use/hear that. The medowlark ln one rotated just fine and worked just fine. They were all activated via phone line and honestly 3 seemed like a bit much considering how tiny the town was. Especially since they had the big 5M blowers... Some of you are wanting to know what happened to them yes? Let me show you.

This happened to the Waldport thunderbolts. All 3 of them were sold to private parties. I am testing the chopper to mine here (the one that was on medowlark ln) hopefully tomorrow, weather permitting. Don't worry though tbolt fans. They are okay! Except... One of the early 5M blowers they had, fried and they ended up throwing it out... (If you want to know why you will have to PM me.) And like I said you know at least they have the whelen on the fire station once the new systems fail...

Oh and one of my last thoughts... Waldport is actually following the footsteps of tillamook. Tillamook did have a siren system (you can hear the model 2 on a youtube video a guy put up and there used to be one in cape lookouts' campground) but it got taken out in Jan, 2013. So technically tillamook started the trend :)

I have never seen a siren in the city of Tillamook since I first paid attention in the mid-90's, but some of the coastal towns several miles away had them.
