Mon Apr 14, 2014 4:18 pm

Menomonie Wi, in Dunn County is looking at replacing its system of 3 Whelen 3016's and 3 Whelen 2016's ( four horns per array, facing three directions) need to be replaced after 3 of 6 sirens failed last month's test. they are looking for mechanical sirens due to the cost to repair and replace the electronics.

First siren will go up sometime this spring, at Sherman elementary school, on west vine st. this location is within 20 minutes biking distance from my house. I will record this siren as soon as I can. the other two sirens will be added each year after. those locations are: airport Dr by the airport (and less than a mile from the Riverview park srn and Whelen 2908 dam failure siren) and Old town hall road (by gander mountain south west of Oakwood mall). also, the pole of the 2001 srn that is at Riverview park, and just a block away from the dam siren above, needs to be replaced due to woodpecker holes making the pole weak and unstable. here is the map with blue pins marking new locations. https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=21 ... 5,0.822601

Menonmonie has ask Federal and Whelen both bid for new sirens. Federal is biding the 2001-130 and Whelen is biding the Vortex/4004 but the city are not sure with manufacture to go because some of the city council members believe the best price isn't the best value and quality. Federal total bid is 65,000 and Whelen is 86,660 it will be interesting on what direction they go. I hope to get up there next month to record one of WPS 3016

I think they should look into Eclipse 8's. They only have one motor to worry about and are omnidirectional. They would really get people's attention in Attack.

I have to agree on this one. I just can not believe that 4 2001-130 is going to cover the whole town.

Yea it will DEFINANTLY take more than 4 2001's to create an effective overlap.

508 low tone would carry farther than a 2001. is it the controllers of the current Whelen that are acting up? why don't just update controls?

Very true! Nashville system is 70+ Eclipse 8 sirens along with some 508s. My house is between two of the Eclipse sirens, and I must say the "attack" tone used for tornado warnings gets one's attention!

I've only heard a 508 once; observed one of Nashville's during a recent test. I've heard some of Brentwood's 2001s several times and must agree that the 508s low tone would outdistance the 2001.
