New Modulator 2 installation

Wed Apr 16, 2014 2:09 am

I dropped by waipahu high school to see their brand new MOD6024B-UV. Its on a metal pole and has a solar panel on top of it. It is also fitted with a Verizon wireless antenna because state civil defense now relies primarily on a cellular "CDMA" signal for siren activation. I also posted a picture of a relitivly new MOD 1 which was installed a few months ago for comparison.

Wow, they really did compact the cells with the Mod 2. Nice photos!

I'm hoping they also have some type of UHF / VHF or digital relay back - up for when the cell network crashes like it did last summer in a few tornados, or 9/11, or the Boston marathon etc...etc...etc...Can't say I would ever really be comfortable with a straight up cellular set up I'm not comfortable with a Duplex repeater system for reliability Simplex is nice...

Most sirens still have the old VHF antennas on them but they are disabled. I agree that they should have a backup since the cellular system jams up really easily out here.

It gets even better, during and actual emergency, the civil defense system has no priority on the Verizon network. They are "just another coustemer". If lines get jammed, there is no other way of activating the system.

you don't get a all circuits busy on a cell phone your call just does not connect or if it does you get dropped and it says on phone call lost.

Cell calls here go to: if tower in City of Milwaukee it goes to city of Milwaukee 911 center if it is busy which I have had happen it has a recording saying stay on the line the next available operator will answer your call. if the tower is outside of the city than the Sheriffs dept answers the 911 call if they are busy you call just rings and rings until they answer
