Goderich, Ontario may put up a tornado siren at courthouse

Recently learned that Goderich town officials are looking into installing a siren at the Huron County courthouse in the centre of town.

The move is in the wake of the Goderich tornado inquiry from the Aug. 21. 2011 F3 tornado which recommended the town have a siren. The tornado devastated the town causing $130 million in damage. The salt mine has switched their emergency siren back on and will sound it during severe weather. They're also testing that siren on the first Wednesday of every month at 1230pm if anyone ever makes it out there. IIRC the Sifko salt mine siren is an STH-10 down near the public beach.

From what I heard Goderich could A: buy a siren, or B: set up speakers that will mimic the sound of a siren (no idea why they'd choose option B tho). Huron County has also introduced a reverse 911 system that will call people who register.

I personally don't think the courthouse is where the possible siren should be as it's on the north side of town, and very near the Sifko siren, leaving siren over-kill on the north side, but no coverage on the south side of Goderich.

Why would you go with the idea of putting speakers up to mimic a siren? That's like San Francisco and their ATI's.

Any idea what siren model the town is considering? I sure hope that if they pick plan A, they choose something decent. Although even an ATI would probably be better than a set of speakers.

Nope. Huron County has a bunch of old air raid and fire sirens kicking around that they have discussed using. Clinton relocated their Model 2 to the centre of town to be used for tornado warnings. It's possible they might re-use on of the old county sirens, or buy a siren. Woolwich Township in Waterloo Region bought a 2001 with plans to buy more sirens in the future. They've been paving the way in Southern Ontario with emergency management dealings, so they hypothetically could be in contact with Huron County and who knows maybe a federal signal could be on the way. There's also Lambton County which is strictly ATI. Huron County asked the provincial government to fund tornado siren projects, but were denied the money. Ontario does not have emergency planning dollars, or a disaster reserve. All funding for preparing for, and dealing with the aftermath, of emergencies is up to local municipalities.

Huron County has a medley of Model 2, 5/7, and STH-10 sirens. They do however have a still functional (as far as I know) Canadian Carter siren in Dashwood.

It is functional but they only get like five calls a year.
