Rotating Sirens - Which was first?

Sun May 25, 2014 2:50 am

Here's an interesting question that came to me while watching test videos: what was the earliest model of siren to be sold that used a rotating beam of sound instead of omnidirectional propagation? Would it be the Mobil-Directo?

Thanks!

That's actually a very good question.

The Gas MD debuted in 1948 (or something around there), I believe. The next rotating siren, the Thunderbolt, didn't come until 1952.

IT could be the MD, but don't quote me on it. I'm not very good at getting stuff right these days.

When did the rotating HORs come in? I personally think it was between the MD and the Thunderbolt, but I'm not 100% sure on that, so take it with a grain of salt.

The Chrysler-Bell Victory Siren was in 1942. They rotated.

Do you mean "rotated under a motor that was a part of the siren?" or "rotated with either it's own motor or was set on a platform or some separate system that let them rotate?"
Own and love a Thunderbolt 1000 and a Model 5.

I have many hobbies and interests. And I love them all.

The ASC website says they started siren production in 1942, which would be the Mobil Directo.

Could be, they made more than just the MD (although I think those were all vehicle sirens...)
Or am I confusing B&M and B&N again?

B&M made the vehicle sirens, B&N was the metal fabrication company.

Just to clarify according to the above question, I'm talking about any siren that rotates its beam of sound, whether the rotation mechanism is driven by the siren motor or a separate motor.

Yeah but didn't someone have to turn them manually? By the way I'm new here.
