Historic, interesting pictures from Wichita, Ks.

Wed Dec 03, 2014 2:11 am

I recently read "Kansas In the Heart of Tornado Alley" from the Images of America series of books...here are a couple of pictures from the book showing a couple of the older, probably now out of service, sirens from the Wichita (Sedgwick Co.) Kansas area.

Image
Here a Sedgwick County Snorkel fire apparatus is being used to facilitate servicing a siren located on a water tower structure.

I am not exactly sure on the story behind this one....it does appear that the siren was in service prior to this picture being taken due to what appears to be rust spots on the metal parts.

Those sirens should be all out of service. If I'm not mistaken, they replaced their entire system with ATIs.

There are a few of the old sirens still in service, IIRC.

Safe bet the first picture with the ladder must have been taken in the days before OSHA.

Both of these units are out of service. Our entire system was upgraded with the ATI REACT series controllers and radios, but in all of the older federal signal stuff we have around here, the AR timers and RCM panels and such are still there. Our system was too big for the SiraTrol radios.

The first one is the Thunderbolt at Lawrence Dumont stadium, no doubt. That unit was decommissioned and an HPSS32 went up to cover for it in the Delano district.

As for that 2T22, no idea, but we don't have any here in Wichita anymore.
