With this original topic having been started in 2007 and the recent conversation having nothing to do with the original subject, I think it's time to shut this thing down. gman 1, I'd suggest to you putting a little more effort into your own research instead of relying on others to research for you. Most of your questions could have been answered with a simple Google search or reading the manual for the radio you wished to purchase.
In response to "Playing cops and robbers over the ham without a license", I should note that transmitting on any Ham frequency without a license is illegal. The UV5R doesn't reach very far so its highly unlikely that someone would catch you, but if someone did and turned it in you could be facing a hefty fine. It seems much more logical to just get a walkie talkie from Walmart and avoid the trouble.
