What happened to the sirens in Purcell, Ok.?

Tue May 19, 2015 11:26 pm

Today (5-19-15) I was down in South Central Ks. along the Ks./Ok. border....heard on the radio that there was numerous Tornado warnings in Oklahoma and that the city of Purcell 's sirens would not and/or could not be sounded so local law enforcement used the sirens and p.a on the patrol units to alert the people in Purcell of the Tornado warning.

So again I ask......what's going on? Wrong time of the year and wrong location to be without outdoor warning devices.

Well, they do have nine Modulators. Possibly an activation malfunction?

Apparently they must have worked at least once during the warning since you can obviously hear one loud and clear in this video that someone took.

That almost sounds like a stationary vehicle siren ...fire apparatus, volunteer fire fighter...something along those lines perhaps.....I could be wrong, though, as I am use to what we have around here for sirens.

The radio report did say the city of Purcell or with in the city of Purcell....(Distant radio station with interference) ...maybe this video was out in the county and used Purcell as the closest city as a point of reference.

I just read about that as well. I have no idea what was going on, they have 9 of them. It seems unlikely that an entire system would go out at this time of year, unless it was due to lack of upkeep.
Kicking it in the siren party since '08

That's a MOD in Ian's video above. It sounds just like the MODs at Tinker AFB when they sound in "attack". It has been a while since I have been in Purcell, but either every day at noon or Friday at noon or Wednesday at noon the Purcell MODS play the Westminster chimes: The point being, they are tested very regularly.

I received a push notification on my phone from KOCO TV5 warning: "McClain County is having trouble with its tornado sirens. Stay tuned for updates to severe weather.". I couldn't find a news story using google, but could the issue have actually been another agency in McClain County that had the malfunction?
