Grant, Nebraska Sirens

Thu Jul 14, 2011 9:16 pm

I was staying with my parents in Grant last week, and finally got pics of their sirens in town. I posted the links, since I can't make them smaller for some reason. First up is their Thunderbolt 1003 and Model 5, located on top of the fire station:

Judging by the look of the chopper cap, it may have been replaced at some point. Both sirens were used for fire calls; the 1003 on hi/low, and the Model 5 in attack. In addition, the Model 5 was also used for the noon and 5 o'clock whistle. To my knowledge, they are only used for tornado warnings now.

Next is a siren that I can't identify (I'm thinking a Sentry, maybe?) It's located on the South side of the park:

Sorry for the off angle, but I was shooting it from the window of my truck. Again, I'm not sure what make or model this siren is; I'm not good with the less common sirens out there. I was hoping to get a recording of them on test day, but I was visiting my grandmother in the hospital. Hope you all enjoy!

Your unknown siren is either a sentry 15v or 20v

I thought it was a Sentry. I was going to try and get a look at the control boxes, but as luck would have it a Sheriff's patrol car was parked right by the pole it was mounted on.

Yes it is. My parents hear it and sometimes the Sentry every test day. You can also hear the Tbolt in a YouTube video of a large tornado that touched down there in 2007. I'm not sure if they still use the Model 5 for anything, or if it's even operational any more. I'm hoping to contact the city manager about it and the Tbolt to see if there are any plans in the future to replace either of them.

Just came back from a visit there, and the 1003 is very much alive! There was a fire call, and the VFD uses a wailing hi/lo alert. The Model 5 is also still used every day at noon and 5 o'clock.

Would that video be Mike Holllingshead's (extreme instability)? That was one scary looking tornado.
I am Thunderbolt. Hear me ROAR!

That would be the one. It looks like he made the clip private on Youtube now, but it's still on his website. He has some stills of it posted on there, too. Grant was extremely lucky that night!

Sorry to revive an ancient post...just got back from visiting there last week, and the Sentry and 1003 are GONE. They put up two T-128s in their place. I talked to someone that works for the city, and supposedly the Sentry and T-bolt could not be heard outside the town limits, where the
T-128s can, and the old ones were not radio activated like these are. Funny, because my parents live about 1/2 mile from the closest one, and I couldn't hear it inside their house. There was never a question if the T-bolt was going off. Oh well, hopefully the old ones didn't get scrapped; the guy I talked to didn't know what happened to them, and the city manager hasn't answered my e-mail yet.
