Quest for the Fedelcode: 10/16/15

Sat Oct 17, 2015 2:27 am

First time I've posted one of these hunt threads in quite a while...but this one is worth it. We visited a couple other interesting sirens besides the main target, and even discovered a few I missed!

(Also, on another note, we drove 391 miles round-trip and spent 9 hours out to visit this Fedelcode. I hope you like the photos, guys! :P)

------

After passing a few sirens covered on previous hunts, our first stop was Jetersville, home of this ancient Denver Duplex discovered by Signal Steve at the old fire department. I doubt this thing would run if you applied power to it. It certainly didn't look active to me.

Next we visited Burkeville. I had been told by some folks in the next town over, Crewe, that this town didn't have any sirens, but nonetheless we found this shy Model 5 on the water tower...

...and this awesome solar WPS-3016, the second known to exist in the state. It matches the Crewe install perfectly, which makes me wonder if it was put up by the county. I'll have to dig around at some point.

After that it was off to Keysville, where this Model 5 showed up at the fire department, behind the local Food Lion.

Next was a surprise. I wanted to visit this FD solely because of the name (seriously, how does an area become known as the "Bacon District"?), but to my surprise they had a brand-new 3V8-H! I had previously marked this station off as siren-less.

Image

Now we reach Halifax. First off we have their new siren, a 7V8 at the FD. This was put up in 2012, and sounds for tornado warnings. No idea when/if they test regularly.

Image

And secondly, the crown jewel, and the whole reason I came all this way...one of three Fedelcode Model 1s known to exist. This is on the water tower, smack in the middle of town. I was unable to determine if it's active or not, but it sure looks like it could be.

After that our daylight was running low, so we stopped at this rusty old Fedelcode 5 in Cluster Springs...

...and this older 3V8-H in Virgilina...

...and called it a day.

Hope you enjoyed the fruits of our gas and time. Thanks for reading! :)

Bacon District is officially my favorite town name in the world.

Nice pictures, BTW. Glad I could (inadvertently) help you find a Model 1.

Hard to tell from the angle the photo was taken (my eyes may be playing tricks on me), but it looks to my eyes like that Whelen has a new(er) box on it. Looks like the kind of box with a shorter top compartment and an offset battery compartment where the speaker cables go into the box next to the batteries. These were made early-2000s and usually had 440z 2020 controllers inside of them.

An example of what I mean:
