Rooftop mounted sirens

It's not as common in the midwest as it is on the east coast. They aren't too common around where i live.

At least 1 in every 10 sirens you see in my area in the Midwest are roof mounted. The two sirens in the village of Pewaukee are both roof mounted. North Lake and Merton both nearby have roof mounted Model 5/7's. And Waukesha Memorial has an inactive rooftmounted EOWS 115, and the Avalon Square in downtown has a roofmounted inactive Allertronic. Brookfield even has a roof mounted at city hall and an inactive :TBolt: in Elm Grove.

Older systems seem to have been roof mounted more than new. Case in point, Chicago. The old system was pretty much entirely roof mounted. They had 88 sirens and I believe all were on roofs. Some on fire stations, some on schools, factories, etc. The new system has 122 sirens and only 1 is roof mounted. In my area I know of 1 newer siren that is roof mounted and that is the E-Class I just posted. It doesn't seem like it's preferred anymore. Seems like it's a necessary evil in some cases. Or what a city wants.

Waukesha had 4 roof mounts when I lived there. Avalon Manor and the hospital were abandoned in place and are still there. The allertronic on the courthouse is gone and the EOWS 115 on New Tribes Mission is also gone.

It could also be an ease of maintenance thing too.

Yes, I think roof-mounts are more compn in older sirens. I've heard pole-mounting is easier to install, but it seems roof mounts would be. I guess a pole is just a better support. I kind of like roof mounts myself.

Just curious, why was this thread created? Roof-mounted sirens are pretty common. Pole-mounting may be slightly more common, but I'd say roof-mounting is next most common.

We have a total of four roof-mounted sirens here in Madison County, AL. Three of them are on buildings at UAH and one of them is on a building at Oakwood University. I have photos of the ones on UAH.
