CLM Haul, 20/24 Port Carter Sirens

Fri Dec 11, 2015 8:48 pm

Hi all,

Yesterday I went to see a gentleman that had actually saved roughly 12 air raid sirens from the scrappers back when they removed them in the 90's. They served the Welland/Niagara region in Ontario. He saved almost every style but had sold a few and scrapped most of them recently so he only had a a couple left. Luckily they were my favorite style, carter and 20/24 port, rare gems id say! Both thankfully still spin and their bearings still seem good because they spin forever after you cranked them up. Full motor speed is just 1500 RPM but they are very loud and have a very deep tone. One will be for sale shortly, I'll make an actual thread but if you might be interested you can shoot me a pm. Ill also be uploading a video of it sounding very soon!!! The OD CLM was already spoken for.

I actually have archives on this system and already found out that one of them, which is siren #18 was installed in Fonthill, ON.

There are no words in any language to describe the greatness of this haul. I think you can surely call yourself the King of CLM!

Both are 3 phase, one is 220V and the other is 550V.

550 volts? Wow, that's a lot of power.
Best of luck finding a power source for that one.

Great acquisitions though! You probably now own every style of CLM ever made!

It's only a 70 volt difference, so you could get it up to 528 from 480 with a couple of 48 volt buck-boost transformers. Still pretty low though, but close enough for a brief run.

If the insulation of the primaries in the transformers can handle it you can series 4 36 volt buck boost transformers and get it up to 552. That's a big if though. 480 transformers are supposed to have 600 volt insulation, but I've never pushed one that high. Being he is in Canada it should be fairly easy to find 550/575 three phase.
